How Far Can Deck Joists Cantilever for Tanzite StoneDecks?
For a Tanzite StoneDecks installation, the maximum joist cantilever depends first on the joist size and then on the joist-span and on-center spacing requirements in the applicable Tanzite installation manual.
The framing layout must satisfy both conditions:
- The joist overhang beyond the beam cannot exceed Tanzite’s maximum cantilever for that joist size.
- The supported portion of the joist must remain within the maximum allowable span for the joist size and on-center spacing being used.
Tanzite’s current maximum joist cantilevers are:
- 2×4: 6 inches
- 2×6: 12 inches
- 2×8: 16 inches
- 2×10: 24 inches
- 2×12: 24 inches
These limits must be evaluated with the applicable Appalachian or Rainier span table. Local building codes, authority requirements and approved plans still govern when they are more restrictive.

What Is a Deck Joist Cantilever?
A joist cantilever is the portion of a deck joist that extends beyond its supporting beam. Moving the beam inward may help accommodate a particular deck layout or reduce the visibility of posts from the deck edge.
However, the cantilever cannot be considered separately from the supported joist span, joist spacing, beam position, connections, blocking and selected Tanzite collection. The complete framing layout must follow the applicable installation manual, approved plans and local requirements.

Tanzite Maximum Joist Cantilever Limits
The maximum cantilever is based on joist size. It is not automatically 24 inches for every deck joist.

A 2×8 joist is therefore limited to a maximum 16-inch cantilever under Tanzite’s guidance—not three feet. A 2×10 is limited to 24 inches—not five feet or more.
The cantilever value must be checked together with the maximum supported joist span and on-center spacing in the applicable collection manual. It should not be treated as an independent allowance.
Technical note: The detailed Appalachian and Rainier span tables begin with 2×6 joists. Do not publish an assumed supported-span value for a 2×4 joist. Only state the confirmed 6-inch maximum cantilever unless Tanzite supplies the corresponding span guidance.
How to Check the Cantilever and Supported Joist Span
For Tanzite-specific planning, use the maximum cantilever and joist-span tables in the applicable installation manual rather than relying on a generic backspan-to-cantilever ratio.
The planning check is:
Planned deck surface depth − permitted joist cantilever = required supported joist span
Then confirm that the required supported span does not exceed the maximum span listed for:
- The selected joist size.
- The joist spacing being used.
- The applicable Appalachian or Rainier collection.
For example, Tanzite permits a maximum 16-inch cantilever for a 2×8 joist. After locating the beam, the remaining supported joist span must still fall within the applicable 2×8 span limit for the selected collection and on-center spacing.
Using a smaller cantilever does not automatically approve the rest of the framing layout. Beam size, post locations, blocking, connections, loads and local requirements must also be addressed.
Ledger, Beam and Rim-Board Connections
Joists at the ledger should be connected with joist hangers and approved fasteners. Any hanger, connector, nail or structural screw must be installed according to the applicable code and the connector manufacturer’s current instructions.
Where the joists sit on the beam, hurricane ties should be installed when required by code. Where hurricane ties are not required, toenailing may be sufficient when permitted by the approved framing design and local requirements.
The rim board can typically be fastened with nails, and joist hangers are not normally required at the rim-board end when the joists are supported by the beam. Do not use a universal “five framing nails” instruction because the required connection depends on the approved framing detail.

Why Beam Position Still Matters
A cantilever allows the supporting beam and posts to sit inward from the deck edge. This may support a particular deck layout or create a less visible support structure.
It does not automatically make the deck stronger or less expensive. The final result depends on joist size, supported span, beam sizing, post placement, connections, blocking, loads and site conditions.
Use the cantilever and span tables as part of the complete framing plan—not as a shortcut for reducing framing materials.
Appalachian Collection Joist Span and Cantilever Guide
The Appalachian Collection uses 8-inch, 12-inch and 16-inch on-center joist-spacing options. The following values apply to Spruce / Pine / Fir framing under Tanzite’s current Appalachian guidance.

Why the Appalachian and Rainier Tables Are Different
Appalachian and Rainier are different deck-surface systems and should not share one generic framing table.
Appalachian boards require direct support from the framing they cross and use collection-specific joist layouts. Rainier outdoor installations use a required subfloor and membrane assembly, with joist spacing and blocking planned around that complete system.
Before selecting a framing layout, compare the Appalachian and Rainier collections and review the current manual for the collection being installed.
How Local Building Requirements Apply
Tanzite’s installation manuals provide product-specific framing guidance. They do not replace applicable building codes, approved construction documents or requirements established by the local authority having jurisdiction.
The American Wood Council DCA 6 guide provides general prescriptive guidance for certain residential wood decks under its stated assumptions. Its span and cantilever tables should not be presented as Tanzite’s product-installation tables.
Where the local requirements or approved plans are more restrictive than the Tanzite manual, follow the more restrictive requirement. Consult a licensed professional when the project falls outside the applicable prescriptive guidance or involves uncertain structural conditions.

Can you cantilever a 2×8 deck joist three feet?
